1. This is an photo from an early meeting with Neil Casey for This Is Not A Sketch Show: A Sketch Show.
At that point, the script was entirely abstract and very difficult to follow. Neil sketched this diagram to give the show more structure, and Ben and I left the meeting feeling energized about the new direction.
We ended up choosing a very different structure and only a little over half of the sketches listed here were actually in the final show. But the multilayered structure of the show is already there; I doubt we would have arrived at the main premise of the show without this intermediate step.
The date of the photo might be the most interesting to me: July 26, 2011. That’s about three weeks before we were scheduled to perform the show as a Spank at UCB. At that point, we had done no rehearsals, the script was less than half-finished and we lacked a “hook” for the show.
What we did have was an imminent deadline, which ends up being more important than anything else.
